BUNION EDUCATION

Bunions: symptoms and treatment options

A bunion is a change in the alignment of the big-toe joint. The visible bump is only part of the problem, so treatment starts with understanding your symptoms and foot structure.

When is a bunion worth evaluating?

Consider an evaluation if pain, shoe pressure, swelling, skin irritation, or changes in walking limit your activities. A surgeon can examine the joint, review your history, and use weight-bearing X-rays when medically appropriate to understand the deformity. A visible bunion alone does not mean surgery is necessary.

Start with the treatment that fits your symptoms

Roomier shoes, padding, activity changes, and other nonsurgical measures may ease discomfort. These measures do not necessarily reverse the underlying alignment. If symptoms continue despite appropriate conservative care, a surgeon can discuss corrective procedures, expected benefits, risks, and recovery.

Why the operation varies

Bunion surgery is chosen for the individual foot. Joint health, deformity severity, instability, other toe problems, prior surgery, and personal goals can affect the recommendation. Minimally invasive correction may be suitable for some patients; others may benefit from a different reconstruction. There is no single best operation for every bunion.
